Collect sales tax from attendees

If your classes are subject to sales tax (whether that's US state sales tax, Canadian GST/HST, UK VAT, or another jurisdiction's equivalent), you can turn on automatic tax collection in Settings. Stripe calculates the correct rate based on your business location, adds it transparently at checkout, and Classy records it on every payment. Tax totals are available in your payment exports so your accountant always has what they need.

Enable sales tax collection

  1. 1Open Settings from your dashboard and choose the Payments tab.
  2. 2Scroll to the Tax section and toggle Collect sales tax on.
  3. 3Confirm your business address — this is what Stripe uses to determine the applicable tax rate for each transaction.
  4. 4Review the calculated rate shown for your location and save. Tax will be added as a line item on every new booking from this point forward.

See tax on a payment

  1. 1Open any payment from the Payments dashboard (or from an attendee's order).
  2. 2The payment breakdown shows the class price, any service fee, the tax amount, and the total charged. The tax amount is always visible as its own line.
  3. 3Attendee receipts — sent automatically by email — also show the tax line, so customers always have a record.

Export tax totals for reporting

  1. 1Open Settings and choose the Data tab.
  2. 2Click Export payments. The CSV includes a dedicated Tax collected column for every transaction.
  3. 3Filter the export by date range to match your tax reporting period — quarterly or annual, depending on your jurisdiction.

Good to know

  • Tax is collected on top of the class price — the price you set is the pre-tax amount. Attendees see the tax added at checkout before they pay.
  • Tax rates are calculated by Stripe using your registered business address. If you're unsure whether your classes are taxable, check with a local accountant or tax professional — rules vary widely by region and class type.
  • Enabling tax only affects new bookings. Past payments are not retroactively updated.
  • If you use Square, Square's own tax settings in your Square account govern tax collection for Square-processed payments. The toggle in Classy applies only to Stripe-processed transactions.
